Dr. Philip Emma has his PhD in Electrical Engineering, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He has recently retired from his position as Chief Scientist at IBM TJ Watson Research Center, in Yorktown Heights, NY.
His expertise is in Computer Architecture, which has to do with the organizations of the internal parts of a computer, and how those organizations effect the performance of the computer. Doing this requires knowing about lots of other things: circuit design, transmission lines, silicon technology, electronic packaging, software, and workloads, to name just a few. Emma wrote parts of 6 books and nearly 300 articles on technology and architecture, and holds over 200 patents. He’s lectured and given keynote presentations at many conferences, and has taught at several universities. He is a well-known speaker in his field. Now retired, he works as an expert witness for patent litigation.
And now retired, he’s doing what he’s always wanted to do: writing fiction. He’s always been an avid reader, but all of his professional writing had been technical. While Emma enjoys all kinds of books, he has always been drawn to some of the dry humor that some detective stories bring to bear. He’s trying to do that in his books. They don't contain gore or explicit sex. The goal is to amuse, to provoke thought, and perhaps to educate slightly.
